I have been involved in Process & Piping Engineering for over 30 years.

I am having trouble finding requirements for sizing a Catch Tank. I have been asked to replace an existing atmospheric catch tank which has 2-6" incoming headers, each collecting rupture disk discharge lines from numerous reactors of various sizes. The tank has an 8" vent to atmosphere. Is there a code or rule to follow? 1 1/2 times the largest reactor? NFPA 30 does not reference sizing. I do not want to blindly replace in kind and discover I did not follow a code or Best Practice. Thanks,

You didn't specified liquid/gas/two phase flow service. As far as i know,in two phase flow service NL of the tank should be based on maximum expected liquid inventory among all cases may receive by the tank with considering accumulation due to simultaneous cases (if any).Size of the vent would be calculated based of maximum receiving gas flowrate and design pressure of the tank.

I think a sketch of your system along with the key information may lead to conduct for better understanding your problem and submitting better assistance.

temagee,

Check out Section 2.3 of the following web article for some guideliens for relief catch tank sizing:

http://www.chemstati...cles/Relief.pdf

If you have access to company standards like Shell DEP or Mobil, these too cotain some guidelines for relief catch tank sizing.

Hope this helps.
