Dear all.
At first, introduce my self. I'm a process engineer of engineering company.
I've been working for 4+ years.
It's been always exciting working as PE.
Also, glad to join this forum. I've got some positive inputs since then.
Thank you guys.
Now, this is my first question in this forum.
We are designing a LNG Plant right now. Now we have a problem regarding requirement of dike (or spill control) of tank stored oil.
Detail:
We have slop oil tank, which received recovered oil from CPI separator and Flare blow down drum.
Normally, the slop oil content in tank is about >2500 ppm. But rarely HC condensate is received from Blow down drum.
Tank volume is about 20m3.
My question is:
Does this Slop oil tank need dike or other spill control device?
If yes, why?
If not, why?
Thank you in advance for the answer.
Regards,
Winanto

Hi,
I am also working in a MNC of engineering design in refining sector as a process Engineer and presently working in design of Crude Unit.
As per my understanding spill back control is not required in Slop tank. Slop oil is mainly coming from CPI Separator and flare blowdown which is in intermittent service. So usually the tank will be running through very low capacity and operative mainly in case of turndown or any start-up case and also relief valve pop-up case (flare blowdown drum will be in intermittent service). Hence there is no need to provide a spill back control system which is mainly used for large capacity equipments viz. Crude charge Pump, Naphtha storage tank etc.
Hope this helps.
With warm regards,
Shubhasis

To me this sounds astonishing,
since I understand the materials referred here should be fairly volatile and most probably flammable.
accordingly NFPA30 should be reffered and the largest diameter tank' contents should be bechmarked for the containment's (diked) capacity.
Hope this shows helping way forward.

Dear All,
Thank you for the reply.
Now we decided to install dike or other spill control.
The HC composition is difficult to determine. It has wide range.
Tank itself also equipped with flame arrester. So, the dike and flame arrester are in-line, no contradictive.
