Dear All ,
Soon I will have to do data collection from a methanol plant ( whole ) ,I am not sure where to start and where to end , Can any body who got operation exposure , as well as those who got similar experience guide me to collect which data ? (eg: DCS /laboratory report etc.)where to collect, how to proceed , I have a time of 3 days for this activity , basically I use this data in simulation model improvement , design etc.
I appreciate your valuable guidance .

Regards,

Satish

For simulation improvement i guess you would need operating pressures, temperatures, flows, levels & compositions.
You would get most of these from the DCS & operater logs.Operators usually take readings every 2-3 hours so it shouldnt be a problem.Compositions from DCS (Analyser outputs) or ask the lab folk to get you a report. Also get a copy of the P&ID which should give you an idea of the equipment and the design pressures etc.

If you have a process flow diagram it should show normal operating parameters.
Compare these with actual figures from operator log sheets and DCS readings.

Hi Satish,
I would add following in addition to what others have said.

AA. Before collection of date , please ensure that
1.Try to understand the PFD and establish mass and energy balance using PFD.
2. Mark up the tag/parameters (on your P&ID) you want to measure and record.
3. Important flow meters like NG feed and fuel, steam flow to reformer are calibrated or zero check done by Inst/maint.
4.Calibrate analysers .

BB. During data Collection :

1. Stabilise plant load at a particular load preferably at maximum load possible before starting data collection.
2. Keep storage tank , flash drum buffer constant to get a correct production volume.
3. Keep all process gas and purge gas vents closed ; try to measure /estimate if you are venting any purge gas or feed gas.
4. Measure Compressor suction and discharge pressure and temperature at each stage for calculating correct politropic efficiency.
5.Measure Turbine inlet and exhaust parameters .
6. Establish mass balance end of each day data collection and reconcile with plant production and consumption figures.
7. Use plant average data for the calculation.
8. Collect catalyst data and catalyst performance evaluation report.
9. Collect heat exchanger data.

Hope this will guide you to collect plant data and do the plant performance evaluation.

Kind regards,
satyajit
