Please share your views on centrifugal gas compressor curves

Is there is any allowed operating region/preffered operating region in the centrifugal gas compressor curves (Polytropic head Vs Volume flow) other than surge /stall flow regions.

Is there is any guide lines or usefull information about evaluating the centrifugal gas compressor curves and surge control systems.
