Dear All,

Good day!

Scenario: An atmospheric tank with an internal heating device is used to store palm kernel oil with a boiling point of greater than 350 ºC. Heating medium is hot water with a supply temperature of 80 ºC.

A conservation vent and an emergency hatch will be installed to protect the tank from over/underpressure scenario. Please guide me on how to calculate the relief rate for the conservation vent in the event of tank heating coil tube rupture.

API 2000 does not elaborate on this type of scenario.
Will greatly appreciate additional design references on relief calculation.

Thanks in advance.

sendovash,

This case can be treated in a similar manner to a tube rupture case for a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger which is very well described in Section 5.19 of API STD 521 5th Edition January 2007.

Regards,
Ankur.

You failed to submit adequate information about the condition of hot water specially its operating pressure and flowrate and also about the temperature which the palm kernel oil to be maintained at during the storage.

These information is needed for evaluation of hot water state and flowrate while being relieved from a ruptured coil tube.
