Hi,

 

I need some initial tips for my design problem. I ll appreciate if you give me some suggestions for initial estimations.

 

Here is the problem; A mixture of ethanol and water is produced in an industrial site. Amount of 30 tons pro day. Water content is 35 mass%. The aim is to regenegarete the ethanol(requested purity: 78% mass%) and purify the water (less that 3 mass% contamination). Study the possible seperation processes and select the most suitable one. Design the process and the equipment. For each unit give the mass, component and heat balance equations.

You have enough information for an overall material balance. How large are your product streams? How much of each component is in the feed and in each product? Analyze the physical properties of your components. How are they are different? How do they interact with each other? How miscible are they? How different are the boiling points? What does a vapor-liquid equilibrium plot of the binary system reveal?
