I am final year undergraduate chemical Engineering.I am working on a project on heater-treaters.
I have to calculate the heat transfer area(and thus the length and diameter) of the firetube in heating section of heater-treater by performing modelling and heat balance in heating section,

1. I am new to this equipment. Can you please guide me on how to perform the heat transfer calculations(Heat balance in firetube)? I will be really grateful to you.

The heat balance equation which I am using is:

 m_fuel*(LHV)=q_convection+q_radiation+q_losses

where q_conv is calculated from dittus boelter and q_rad from correlation given  by hottel.

2.  Also, how to determine the length of convection and radiation sections in heater treaters?

Deepak93:

Heater-Treater design has traditionally been concentrated in the area of special oil & gas engineering and fabricators.  This is a very specialized and arcane part of our industry that has developed through the years based on empirical data and experience-based expertise.  Please read some of the attached documents to get an idea of where the real experience in this field rests.

As I previously advised you, you should furnish ALL of the detailed information and basic data that you have on your topic.  The more information you furnish the more help we can give.  Include a detailed flow diagram of your proposed process as well with temperatures, pressures, and compositions.  For example, how much background and basic information do you know about heater-treaters?  Are you proposing to heat your treater with a direct-fired firetube?  What type of crude are you using?  At what pressure?  We can only help you as much as you help us.  You could also do extensive internet research - where most of this material came from.

I strongly recommend you heed the above if you want or need detailed help on specific details.  For example, if you plan to use a fire tube, I would recommend you use a conservative heat flux.  These type of heaters are designed using a heat flux, based on prior experience.

I hope this helps.
