hye,

how to specify mesh size for the strainer? the fluid is steam, strainer is upstream of control valve. i don't really know why do we need to have strainer at upstream of control (existing system) valve and how to specify it.

your sharing is highly appreciated.

Farid,

This is to prevent rust to block the cage of the valve . Probably Spirax sarco website should provide the answer or Check with your E&I engineer or valve manufacturer.

Hi farid,

For strainers, generally it should have the mesh opening area which is more than 4 times the cross section of pipe. This is generally used to avoid frequent chocking of strainer. In few cases, it is 2 times the CSA of pipe.

From this, you can choose mesh size. Here the avg dirt particles should be greater than the mesh opening size.
