Good day,
I am at a Coke Plant which uses an MEA Solvent for it's Sulfiban Desulferization system. For those who are familiar with this type of system Heat stable salts are inevitable and its mitigation should be considered before the plant's operation.
The Lean amine stream was analyzed and the Heat stable salt causing anions were determined to largely be due to formates. Formic acid is easily produces in coke plants by a simple reaction between Carbon Monoxide and water. However most of the Formic acid isn't coming from the gas stream, through some research I found a paper done by Baker Petrolite in 1998, recommending the use of deaerated water for the MEA solution make up, to reduce the oxygen content in the water and reduce the formates in the stream.
(If you are interested the paper is linked here: http://www.hghouston...s and Cures.pdf )
I was not able to find any other paper to support this claim or to even report that another company has adopted this practice or recommendation.
To those in the group who are familiar with MEA Sulfiban systems, have you ever considered deaerated water for Lean MEA Solution make up? Have you seen high formates in your lean amine stream and if so where have you determined the source of formates to be coming from?
Any assistance on this issue will be greatly appreciated.
