Ouch, you're hurting my ears. Your query applies to all (or at least most) pump services. You tend to use a larger size inlet pipe because you are often limited in NPSH available at the pump inlet. The larger inlet pipe limits hydraulic losses approaching the pump. Concerning the inlet nozzle, the pump supplier is trying to put forward the lowest cost offering that he can which will meet your requirements. To do so, he uses the smallest practical nozzles. A reducer "corrects" for the common situation of these two elements not matching.
