I'm doing a project about a possible future career for my math class. For the project, I need to have interviews of those already in the chemical engineering field. If you could, answer the following questions as best you could. Thanks.

(Fill out as much as you feel comfortable giving out)

1. Where do you work, what do you do there?

2. Are you happy working in this field?

3. Does being a chemical engineer interfere with your home life at all?

4. Which college/university did you attend? How long?

5. Which (if any) courses have you taken post-college for your career (before you got your job)?

6. How often (if at all) must you take refresher courses to maintain your career?

7. What is one of the most commonly performed tasks in your career?

8. What is something not widely known about being a chemical engineer?

9. What is your favorite part of your job?

10. What is your least favorite part of your job?

>1. Where do you work, what do you do there?

UK - running engineering projects for various chemical and food & drink companies.

>2. Are you happy working in this field?

Definitely.

>3. Does being a chemical engineer interfere with your home life at all?

I maybe work harder than I would like at times, but all in all there's give and take, and it's a rewarding job.

>5. Which (if any) courses have you taken post-college for your career (before you got your job)?

No college courses, but did do graduate training scheme and various technical training on the job.

>6. How often (if at all) must you take refresher courses to maintain your career?

It's wise to get on as many as you can, especially to begin with!

>7. What is one of the most commonly performed tasks in your career?

Sizing (i.e. specifying the type and flowrate etc) for pumps, heaters etc.

>8. What is something not widely known about being a chemical engineer?

In the UK at least, there's not a great deal of Chemistry in the average chem eng course. Chem Engers are more interested in what's happening on the bigger scale than on the molecular level.

>9. What is your favorite part of your job?

Having an idea, selling that idea to our customers, then getting to design and build it! (and see it work with any luck)

>10. What is your least favorite part of your job?

At the moment, it's the travelling - 3 hours a day, and early morning starts.

>11. Is your job ever repetitive?

Every day is different. Some days are boring, but there's always tomorrow to look forward to.

>12. What do you feel was your greatest accomplishment?

Having a little idea for a project that cost nothing to implement, but saved the company loads and loads of money!

>13. Why did you choose this career?

I liked the big scale of the chemical industry. I like the challenge and variety in my job.

>14. What is the average starting salary for a Chemical Engineer?

In the UK I'd say about £20,000 per year to begin with.

>15. What is the outlook for this career?

Pretty good!

>16. Are there many chances for promotion in this career field?

Definitely. What you do with your career is up to you!

>17. What are some of the benefits usually provided?

Varies with the job. I get life insurance and sometimes a performance bonus.

>18. What types of math are, and how are they used in your field?

Lots and lots. Computer modelling is used more and more. Apart from that, I've used everything from basic math, to business accounting to full on calculus and 3D modelling over the past few years!!

>19. Would you suggest this field to others?

Of course. But it's hard work, and needs commitment. Make sure it's right for YOU before you enrol!

>20. What courses would you suggest to someone interested in this career?

Have a look at www.whynotchemeng.com, and www.discoverchemeng.com for more details on courses etc. For the US, www.aiche.org may be more use to you.

Hope that helps!!!

A.
