can any one plz explain, how can i calculate the slug volume during pigging operation?????

i want to check the adequacy of a three phase separator whether it will be able to handle that slug during pigging..

many thanks;

Each production flowrate corresponds to a certain liquid holdup, or total slug volume. The results are normally represented in the form of chart, i.e. Production Flow vs. Liquid (Hydrocarbon and Water) holdup. You should refer to the Flow Assurance document - usually embedded in the startup procedure - and see what range of liquid volumes you can expect to accumulate in the pipeline.

there are no such doc,s available. i need to start from the scratch to calculate slug volume during pigging. Are there any mathematical formulas or co-relations for this purpose. i heard from someone that PipeSim software estimates this slug but i don,t have that software with me. i will appreciate ur help.

Zulu,

Have a look at the following links. These might prove useful:

Dear zulu,

what is the fluid in the pipelines?
in case of pigging this is the simples way to calculate the
slug, just find the total liquid inventory in the pipeline

but be sure when u size a slug catcher, that the slug won't come in one time
but it will come to the slug catcher at the same rate of your pigging rate

preferrable to do this with software such as pipesim, pipephase, pipesys, or OLGA
but if you don't have just calculate the total liquid inventory in the pipeline

I think yous should do pigging simulation using Pipephase. In Pipephse, you should use Sphere Analysis method. The data required are your fluid composition, normal operation fluid flowrate, pressure, temperature, ambient temperature, heat transfer coefficient, pipe length+dimension+elevation, and sphere / pig diameter. Pipephase shall give you how much slug volume resulted from pigging operation.
