Dear All,
As part of a mini-project I am going to be carrying out at our office, I am planning to start holding HSE meetings for our Staff. Now, I have experience from working for Enron (Teesside Power Station, UK) of these sort of meetings where an open discussion of HSE issues was invited, but for research purposes, can anyone provide any suggestions for the format? Some sort of personal experience of this type of thing would be great.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Cheers,

Nick

Jellybean,

For the H(ealth) and S(afety) part there's a wealth of safety topics available on the web e.g. http://www.webworldi...html-ssi#topics, or just Google for "safety topics".

A lot of these sites also give guidelines on how to hold such a meeting.

I'm sure there must be a lot of E(nvironmental) topics as well.

At my company (engineering and construction company) we often use case studies (accidents and near misses) from clients, which are presented and then discussed. We also try to promote safety outside of the working hours, so often driving safety and safety around the house (DIY) is discussed as well.

Try to keep your topics as close to the audience's work and home/driving experiences as possible to promote discussion

Good luck,
Diederik

Nick:

This is a great program you're undertaking. If I had to do it, I would organize it into two (2) major categories of safety, health, & environmental contamination:

1) The various ways and manner in which the individual engineer can promote his/her contributions to the H, S, & E;

2) How to scrutinize and become aware of OTHER'S contributions (or, more importantly, their LACK OF CONTRIBUTIONS) to H, S, &E and how this can impact the workplace and surroundings.

The first point is the one we are all very familiar with (or should be); the second one is the one that I fear and always prepare myself for. In any workplace, an engineer is not only subject to his own mistakes and oversights with regards to HS&E, but is almost always totally exposed to those of other engineers (or of the organization). And it is this second point that often cathches us by surprise and disbelief - simply because we are too aloof or disinterested in what others do beyond our control and influence. This is a sore subject to discuss - mainly because it involves total honesty and candor, literally a Mea Culpa session between engineers. But is a positive manner to instill faith and confidence into a safety program aimed at protecting everyone in the workplace - not just the individual him/herself.

And, by the way, the second point includes the impact to your near-by, close neighbors that can (& usually are) be affected by your workplace actions. I'm referring to the farmers or residents down the road or lane from your plant.

I think you find it to be very useful to use the online discussion forum of the Safety Information Resources Inc. (SIRI) at this web site:

This is a nice topic that you want to discuss. I have to do is I will organize and each selection follows the same basic format and contains these elements..

Introduction for Health and safety isuues, scoop and application of a program or activity
Description specific for health and safety, the roles and the responsibilty for
establishes the department, supervisors, EHS and the individual worker. you need to have a listing of additional references and resources.

i found this link Workplace Health and Safety i thinks this is useful.
