Dear Friends;
I have some questions regarding CFD (Computational fluid dynamics) analysis.I appreciate your help:
1)Is it necessary to do CFD analysis for all separators?
2)Who must do CFD analysis?Engineer Designer(who designs separator) or Vendor( who will provide separator)?
3)Is CFD analysis only to be done for separator or it is applicable for other equipment as well?
thanks in advanced

Hi abuali.ghader,

First to elaborate more on CFD,
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is an engineering method for simulating the behavior of systems, processes and equipment involving flow of gases and liquids, heat and mass transfer, chemical reactions and related physical phenomena. More specifically CFD, or fluid simulation, can be used to reduce pressure drops, to predict aerodynamic lift or drag, to predict the rotor thrust, to calculate the airflow in air conditioned rooms, to ensure adequate cooling, to optimize mixing rates, and so on.

And the answers to the question are:

1. Is it necessary to do CFD analysis for all separators?
Answer: From what I have experience in my project, the answer is No. Mostly CFD analysis will only be done to the critical separator such as separator which is installed in a FPSO (motion effect), suction of compressor (suction scrubber), and etc, In which the performance of the separator is crutial which will effect the performance of downstream equipment.

2. Who must do CFD analysis?Engineer Designer(who designs separator) or Vendor( who will provide separator)?
Answer: It will be depend on project requirement (client) some client may required CFD for critical equipment even on FEED stage, which means the Engineer Designer should do the CFD, but it can be sub-contracted to others. But if it can be forced up until the Detail Engineering, we (Engineering Contractor) may be able to force it as a vendor scope.

3. Is CFD analysis only to be done for separator or it is applicable for other equipment as well?
Answer: No, CFD can also be done for other equipment such as column, static mixer, pump, piping arrangement, and etc depend on what you required and what kind of software you will be using.

Hope it help abuali.ghader
