I am new to the forum. I am a mechanical engineer with a consulting firm. I am trying to determine the best mixing/agitator option for very viscous slurry. I am new to this project so I don't have all the details but the slurry is first prepared by mixing powders and liquids and then moved to a small movable vessel of 1000 liters where another compound is added while mixing. The tank has cooling jacket and connections for compound addition, dust and fume control, instrument, etc. We are investigating what is the best agitator to use and if it should be fixed to the tank or just on a fixed mixing station where the vessel is brought in for mixing. The slurry is non-Newtonian and thixotropic. The customer is trying to minimize as much as possible the use of water for cleaning the tank.

Previous thread http://www.cheresour...h__1#entry37723 refers to a series of articles by Chemical Engineering magazine on agitation. Old, but good material covering a lot of agitation issues. By specifying the physical properties of your system, you could find an answer to the kind of agitator and its speed. You have to decide whether the agitator shall be attached to the tank or not, in the latter case the tank will bear a torque and should have the relevant support.
A alternative solution would be to go to agitator suppliers for advise. This would be convenient, since the tank is small. You may see quite different designs between Chemical Engineering and agitator suppliers.
