We at a Parmaceutical company are planning to install a vent condenser, Purpose of which is to condense back the vapor of the solvents which ultimately leads to Solvent Losses. Details of the Storage Tank and Solvent stored is shared Below
1. Storage Tank Capacity: 10 KL
2. Tank MOC: MS
3. Insulation: 50mm Thick Spintex Layer of Density 50Kg/ Cu Cm along with aluminium cladding of 22 G
4. Solvent Stored: Dichloromethane, (CH2 CL2)
5. Boiling Point: 39.5 Deg C
6. Specific gravity: 1.4
7. Atmospheric Temperature in Tank Installation Area: Arround 50 Deg C in extreme summers.

We plan to design vent condenser for the above and Q=mCpDT can be used.
But for this kinda storage Tank we cant consider 10 KL of Solvent as Mass.

Q= UADT wil hopefully work, But what will be the heat that is gained by the tank with insulation on it

Plz suggest what could be the best possible way to proceed.

Thanks

sahil,

Have a look at the following links:

http://www2.unitar.o...ia_fsolvent.pdf

http://www.epa.gov/t...final/c4s07.pdf

These should help you in estimating the solvent evaporation rate for the condenser design.

Ankur.

Hi,

I cocur with you that 10 kl is not the right figure for the condenser duty. You need to estimate the flow rate:
1. Rate of evaporation - heat transfer from surrounding (sun radiation)
2. Displacement rate during pumping in of solvent into the tanks

Hope the above comments help.
