Hello everyone dear colleagues,

I would like to ask you if there is way to simulate oil desalting process using process simulation tool, especially using Aspen Hysys tool (UniSim, Hysys).

If it can't do using Aspen Hysys, what other simulation tool could simulate oil desalting process.
As far as I know, in industrial processes, before entering in the long chain of refinery processes (CDU, VDU, etc.), oil support a desalting process, or in other situations demulsifier process.
So, the question that I'm interested in is, if can I simulate a desalting process using Hysys software.

Thank you in advanced.

Kindly, Alex[/left]

Thank you for the answer.
Have you tried to do that?

Modern Desalting processes employ an electrostatic desalter. As far as I understand this type of desalter cannot be modeled in HYSYS.

Ankur.

The new samples in hysys 7.1 and newer shows an integrated CDU and VDU model with a desalter but the desalter is a component splitter operation. I've also seen an example from Aspentech using an accumulator to represent the desalter. I'm not sure how useful it is as a model though.

Hi
please let me know how to simulate a desalter exactly?
Best Regards,

The desalter is always a simplified model in process simulators like Hysys, UniSim Design or PRO/II.

You can model the VLL equilibrium, but the solid handling - and especially the solvation - is not yet implemented to these programs.
You can use salt as hypo-components in the heavy and a light liquid phases and define reacion where the salt goes to one phase to another. But in this case you have to tune the reaction and validate the result.

Hi,
The equipment desalter, is usually a vendor package item and is designed based on the crude feed quality and the required quality specification of crude at the outlet. You can find information related to desalter on web and various handbooks on petroleum refining technology. I would recommend to you understand the concept of desalting in total than trying to model with Hysys. Hysys or any other available commercial simulator does not have this capability.
