I have been to an LNG plant where the inlet header pipes to the fin fans (which draw air up) are underneath (but slightly to one side) of the fans. Will the heat coming off these pipes effect the performance of the fin fan exchanger very much? What is best practise?

Hi,

It may be interesting for you to read this paper about air coolers.

Hi breizh,

Thanks for the info. Do you have any practicle experience with fin fans and how wind direction might affect their performance? That is: do you have to take account of heat sources, such as the hot pipes with the process that is to be cooled in the exchangers?
I have seen fin fans where the main inlet pipe is positioned so that it is not affecting or affected by the fans.

The thing is: when the wind comes from a certain direction the effectiveness of the fin fans declines and I was wondering if the main header pipe (carrying the process to be cooled) could affect the cooling of the fin fans, as the wind flows over the inlet header and then into the fin fans.

Thanks

What you have to worry is the dirt ,dust which will affect the heat transfer meaning the need for periodic cleaning of the fins.

Hi ,

I've added a reference and a calculator to support your study.
