i have a DN600 flare line with an expected thermal expansion of 100 mm. I am wondering if I can use expansion joint /Bellow that can take so much thermal expansion. i can use two if that would suit. however I have not seen anyone using them in flare line. as you can see the line diameter is quite large. I dont know the expected flowrate as a result of ESD, but i think it would be quite significant.

Have you seen expansion bellow in flare lines?
Any issues you see in using them?

fimmi,

Has the stress analysis of the flare line dictated to use expansion joint to overcome line movement due to thermal expansion?

Normally the thermal movement of the flare lines to be compensated by expansion loops and as fas as i know using expansion joint haven't been recommended by none of well known design standards and practices but i have heard in one project due to some changes in the flare network routing the relevant contractor had had to use expansion joint in flare line connection to the stack with no recorded problem in its operation stage.

Expansion bellow in operation stages requires proper maintainence and if overlooked can cause serious damage. So the expansion loops are first choice, however i dont think codes restrict from the use of expansion bellows, but i havent seen expansion bellows also in flare networks
