I am having two queries on blow-off hatch for a tank which is set at 90 mbarg. Tank is designed for 120 mbarg.
  • Whether covering of snow over blow off hatch will have impact on openning pressure. What is the normal practice in cold countries to avoid snow covering the blow of hatch.
  • Is there any possibility of freezing of blow off hatch due to very low ambient temperature.
thanking you

You do not tell us what type of vent you have. Assuming that it is a weighted cover, then any weight added to the top will increase the set point pressure. This is simply a weight divided by area relationship.

Tank vents have been known to freeze shut and cause serious accidents. Unfortunately, all vents are not designed to consider the effects of freezing rain and snow. Take care in selecting a vent. Look at the design to see how the seat area is protected from the weather. Also, Teflon or similar materials are less likely to freeze together.

Work with the supplier and ask probing questions.

Have an inspection routine and protect the inspector with appropriate guard rails.

umeshr,

Paul has submitted valuable points regarding your query as always he had done, but i want to add one point:

If in an area where there would be the risk of heavy snowing such that the snow weight would increase the set pressure of the vent opening it should certainly be prevented. In one case i have heard the vent cover was equipped with heat tracing that activated, automatically based on specified temperature or manually by operator, in cold weather to prevent accumulation of the snow on vent cover.

Thanks. Blow off hatch is weight cover type.

Then what Fallah and I have told you is valid.

Also let me add that your P-V vents are also at risk unless they are protected. Snow and ice can accumulate over the screen present on some vents.
