I want to make a pyrolysis of 1g to 5g biomass sample in an horizontal tubular reactor. there is many methods to trap tar in the gas.
So i want to know
Is it possible to use a 250 ml bottle immerging un an ice trap to collecte tar?
may i use a filter after the ice trap before collecting the non condensable gas in a bag?
is there a guide on this kind of expérement?

Seems i'm getting it quiet late, but never mind. If i understand corrctly, Gas phase shall see volatiles and moisture being evaporated together. Most of Tar will not come to gas phase, but possibly brown liquid shall flow down along with any solid resues, Ash etc. In case you expect ash to come to the top and you want to segregate it from rest of volatiles, you better pass it to another column full of ice and cotton both, so that low temperature effect will condense tar and cotton would help in absorbing it. The water shall also condense, but you really need a tall column. the measurement of organic volatiles shall be a must as you may not be able to measure tar and moisture absorbed in this device. May i know exactly how you want to model the experiment. you may send me aphoto to pramendrasri@yahoo.com or psrivastava@technip.com . I would like to help you as this is my favourite subject for last 20 years since i graduated in 1991 from IIT Kanpur. Send me the composition of sample if you have. typically it may have 50-55% C, 5-7% hydrogen, 15-20% ash and 25-30% volatiles. Are you also measuring the temperatures vs mass left to find out the evaporation profile of volatiles. is there any chemical analysis done for sample to find the exact chemical compositions. Without all these it will be dificult to conclude.
Let me know h
