I'm currently trying to design a semi-batch distillation column for extractive distillation of nitric acid from a mixture of nitric acid, sulfuric acid and water. To do so, is it necessary to obtain relevant vapour-liquid equilibrium data. In literature there is very little information available with respect to this ternary mixture. Therefore I want to use process simulation to provide this data.
I'm planning to use ASPEN for the job. Unfortunately I have very little knowledge of the available property packages that come with using such software. After reading some articles regarding this subject, using ElecNRTL (for ionic species) seems the best way to go. But since ElecNRTL uses the ordinary Redlich-Kwong equation for the vapour phase, I have my doubts about the accuracy. It is likely that strong interaction between the components in the vapour phase will result in non-ideal behaviour.
Can anyone confirm that ElecNRTL will provide accurate VLE data for H2SO4/HNO3/H2O mixtures? Are there perhaps other property packages that do the job even better?
