Dear All,
I am in the process of selection Portable gear pump for unloading the Oil Corrosion Inhibiters and Gas Corrosion Inhibiters(OCI/GCI) from Drum to tank. Vicosity of OCI and GCI is up to 10 cp but pump available from vendor is desigened for 29 cp to 140 cp. My concern is what will be effect of this on the Pump performance and discharge flowrate of the pump

regards,
Abhijeet

Abhijeet,

When a gea pump designed for pumping higher viscosity liquid is used for pumping a lower viscosity liquid a phenomena called "slip" is encountered. The lower the viscosity of the pumped material higher is the slip. Slip can be defined as the "back leakage" of the liquid from the high-pressure outlet side to the low-pressure inlet side.

Slip causes the gear pump to be less efficient in terms of flow rate i.e. higher the slip lower will be the flow rate from the pump.

A very nice explanation for the effect of viscosity on the pumping characteristics for a gear pump is provided at:

http://www.micropump...eatability.aspx

Another link that provides guidelines for selecting a postive displacement pump and also discusses the effect of viscosity on pumping characteristics is provided below:

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Ankur.
