Hello,

I'm trying to cost a series of heat exchangers. According to the Chemical Engineering Plant Cost Index, for year 2002, the annual index was about 394. In 2010, it was 520ish. However, the reference I have from the Chemical Engineering Magazine, there are also indices for specific equipment. For instance, if I use Timmerhause to cost a heat exchanger, it will give it to me in 2002 dollars (with an index of 394), when I convert this to 2010 (the most recent data I have), do I use the overall 2010 annual index, or the index specific to heat exchangers for 2010?

Thank you!

If you have info specific to the equipment you need to use them , meaning HX 2002 vs HX2010.

CEI jan 2012 :593.1
Heat exchanger: 683.1

Thank you for the quick reply. Unfortunately, I just have data from TImmerhaus's 2002 estimates for the equipment based on the 2002 Chemical Engineering Plant annual index 394. This index is used for each equipment. I managed to find indices for 2010 from the magazine but that has both the overall annual index and the index for each type of equipment.

Would using the overall index for 2002 and the heat exchanger index for 2010 provide a reasonable cost estimate for a heat exchanger,

cost of HEX in 2010 = cost of HEX in 2002 * HEX index for 2010 / Overall index for 2002

or should I use the 2010 overall annual estimate instead with Timmerhaus' 2002 overall indexed equipment,

cost of HEX in 2010 = cost of HEX in 2002 * Overall index for 2010 / Overall index for 2002

Thanks again,
R.P

In jan 2001 :
CEI was 395.6 and HX 440 .

For the escalation I will use the 2nd proposal .

Hope this helps
