Dear Frinds,

Could you please guid me about the possibility & hazardes Ethylene oxide & water mixture transportation(50%) ?
Do you think ISO Tank is a proper device for transportation?
Is there any possibility of EO & water reaction in ambient condition(Max Temp = 40 c, Transportation Time = 24 hr) ?

Thank you so much for your urgent help

I have not expertise on the topic, but 4 days have passed without answer; so here are some notes, probably useful.
1. Stable conditions of CH2OCH2 are indicated in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethylene_oxide, para of Chemical properties, Addition of water and alcohols. It seems that 40 oC is OK, water should have some requirements concerning purity and not be acidic. Googling "aqueous ethylene oxide" will give more data.
2. http://www.sunocochem.com/HES/tech_manuals_EthyleneOxide.pdf reports properties of CH2OCH2 - H2O mixture, see page 13-14, as well as p.183 and on (mixed there with CH2OCH2 properties). Have a look at page 129 too (CO2). Since CH2OCH2 can be transported by trucks (assumed of higher fire risk), CH2OCH2 - H2O can be also transported the same way (even if this has not been confirmed in web).
3. http://www.petrochemistry.net/ftp/pressroom/cefic%20ethylene-EN_0506.pdf refers to properties and transport of CH2OCH2, but look at pages no 7 and 37. Contact of 50% CH2OCH2 - H2O with skin will cause "burns" worse than CH2OCH2 itself.
4. Road transport regulations of 50% CH2OCH2 - H2O may be almost same to those of CH2OCH2, yet more search is needed to clarify the point. In Europe road transport of dangerous chemicals is regulated by ADR, search for corresponding legislation. Trucks per ADR are judged to have additional safety measures compared to simple ISO trucks (standardized mainly on their frame).
Hopefully someone expert will give more precise info on the subject.

Behnam,

50% solution of EO is not recommended, 10% is maximum with nitrogen blanket (by experience).

http://process-engin...tential-hazard/

EO & water reaction in ambient temperature? less chances. But, other contaminant will react with EO, rust, acid, basic. Use demineralized water for dilution to prevent contaminant, make sure ISO tank is clean.

The flammable range of EO-air mixtures is accordingly 2.6-100%. Avoid vapor pressure that will make greater than 2.6%, use nitrogen for blanket.

"Flammability of Ethylene Oxide & Water Mixtures. In closed systems such as sewers, 100 to 1 water to EO dilution ratios (vol/vol) may be required to produce a mixture that will not support combustion. In open systems, such as around an atmospheric spill, water/EO mixtures can support combustion if the water/EO ratio is less than 22 to 1."

For detail, I can send you an ebook for EO handling, if you'ld like.

Alex
