Hi
I have an project and I want 2 know whether ion exchange phenomena is physical adsorption or chemisorption? n what is the major difference between chemisorption n physical adsorption ? are there any difference in their regeneration process of the adsorbent?
Is there any effect to De and Kya if it is chemisorption or physical adsorption?

thx

Hi
In physical adsorption the molecules of the substance are held by the surface of the adsorbent by weak forces of attraction (Van dar Waals forces) & there is no chemical reaction taking place between the adsorbent and adsorbate (substance to be adsorbed)
On the other hand in chemisorption there is a chemical reaction between the adsorbate and adsorbent.
The regeneration of physical adsorption is easy but regeneration of chemisorbent is difficult
Well I don't have much knowledge about ion exchange but it donot fall in the category of physical and chemical adsorption . Although it often share theory with adsorption but it has its own specilized field .
I think you should go through the book
"Chemical Engineering vol 2
By Coulson & Richardson"

Please correct me if I am wrong in any of the statement.

Regards
Dar

I would classify Ion Exchange in chemi sorption if I had to. Because iin Ion exchange two ions are exchanged by the resin, releasing one ion and bonding another. This is kind of chemical reaction.
