In refineries, reactor severity often describes reactor operating temperatures. It is often applied to fluid catalytic cracking units, reformers, hydrotreaters and hydrocrackers; where temperature is a primary control for extent of reaction. It is typically estimated with respect to operating conditions such as feed composition, catalyst age, products required, etc.
