Hi Naseem.ahmed48 ,

to produce alcohol of 94% purity, you require a series of distillation column. May I know what are the feed compositions, and the operating conditions? where is the feed coming from ?

Thank you

Regards,

Raj Mehta

Naseem:

It is one thing for you to want to design a distillation column; it is entirely another thing for you to want one (or many) of our members to design it for you.  Which is it??

There is no such thing as “guidance” in designing any engineering project.  You either know how to do it – or you don’t know how to do it.   Our Forums are meant to help engineers who have a specific problem where experience, expertise, or know-how can be of help.  Our forums cannot teach you how to design a distillation column.  For that, you have to go to a university for a chemical engineering degree.  They can teach you how to do it.

If you want (or need) our Forum’s help, we will gladly help you.  HOWEVER, please furnish all your work and calculations a well as basic data and scope of work.  We can review and offer advice on what you are doing wrong – or badly – but we can’t furnish your design for you.  We are professional engineers who charge money for our services to make a living.   While we can probably design your project, you should pay a fair price – But we are not in that business.  For that, you can refer to a consulting engineer locally.

I hope this explains what our Forums are organized for and what we do.  There are some very good reasons for our position:  We cannot accept responsibility (legal or moral) for any design you may obtain and use erroneously or without checking it.  If you want a free design and can get one of our members to do it for you, then you (and the member) do it at your own risk as to whether it is OK or if it works or doesn't.  We do not profit (nor do we want to) from any engineering designs.

Hello. For guidance on distillation design I suggest you consult the book by Kister entitled Distillation Design.

Dear Raj mehta

Distillation column for recovery of alcohol from fermented mash (fermentation of diluted cane molasses)

i want just rectified grade so only two columns are enough too.....in first column (flash column) mash may be as bottom product and alcoholic vapours as top product and in 2nd column is as reflux column to achieve the product on desire concentration...

to avoid scaling its better to operate under vacuum.....as around 500mb.ab in bottom of 1st column (boiling column)

feed tempreatuer may rise from mash preheater and by spent wash (bottom product ) may around 50 C

Feed will be fermented mash with around 7 % alcohol..

1. What is the basis of 94% RS ? Is it mole percent ? Volume percent ? or weight percent ? 2. Do back calculation knowing that you have 10 KLPD RS as output, calculate the 100% ethanol content taking distillation efficiency as 98.5% in the wash & then Find the amount of wash required with 7% ethanol. Now move ahead with column calculation knowing the feed amount & compositions. 3. The mash column top gives around 45-55% alcohol content. 4. Approximately around 72 trays are used in the rectifying column for getting overhead product as RS of 94% Thank you. Regards, Raj Mehta
