Hi guys, I'm revising for exams and I have this tutourial question where the answer is (1m) I cant seem to get that answer by quite a large margin.

Q) For the arrangement shown in figure 2 determine the difference in fluid levels, Y,
in the two tanks. The oil has a specific gravity of 0.87. (1.0 m)

Static problem : 

 

Pressure both legs are equal /reference interface oil/ mercury .

 

Pair reservoir +Ro water *g*Hwater +Ro hg*g*Hhg = Patm +Ro oil*g*( Hwater +Hhg-Y)

H water :6m

H hg :0.15m 

g= 9.81 SI unit

1 KN/m2 =1000 Pa 

Pat =1e5 Pa

 

Do the math and it should work .
