Hello,

In the past I have been involved in projects in which I was helping to rate existing flare headers, size PSV's and such but, I have never been involved in designing a non-existing flare system. I am familiar with API 520/521 but, I am hoping someone can point me to some literature that will give me a better understanding of the overall design process (not the process of rating existing equipment but, the design procedure for a non-existing flare sytem). For example, how does one determine where the flare stack is located on the lease? How does one determine the required height of the stack? I am sure a dispersion model is used somehow but, how? As for sizing of the header and stack itself I am sure a program like Aspen Flare Analyzer (Flarenet) is useful.

I would like to outline the main process considerations that go into designing a flare system from scratch.

Thanks!

Dear KeJoSa2010

i think you can find the answer of your questions in API 521 describing the design of each element in the flare system. Just look through it again.

Good luck

Hi,

It might reading API 537 titled; "Flare Details for General Refinery and Petrochemical Service" be a good starting point...

Please go through the API 521.

There are two method for the Flare stack height finalization.

1. Simple approach

2. Brzustwoski and sommer approach

Also there is method for Flare KOD & Water seal drum sizing.

There are several industry accepted softwares to do Radiation / Dispersion modelling.

Flaresim and PHAST come to mind readily.

Both should be able to help you calculate the min height required. Provided you already determined the max flow and flare diameter from Flarenet. Note: if you have a vent tip on this falre you would need to ask the vendor for the details on this. (Type of tip, F Factor, Pressure / Flow curve.)

Hope this helps.
