Good day everyone.

 

I would like to seek your expert recommendations on the acceptable distance between breakout/breaking flanges installed along a slurry pipeline. Breaking flanges shall be installed at regular intervals in a slurry-serviced piperun for access during maintenance activities.

 

I will appreciate any suggestions and recommendations.

Hi !

 

This is generally decided between Piping and Process group,adding flanges at very short distance adds up to the piping load(standard flanges are not light !) and supports requirement.As per piping layout and operating experience you can also identify circuits prone to choking.

 

To let you have an idea of intervals ,you may start with palcing break flanges at an interval of 10~15 m distance.

In a project i involved, there was 6 m distance between breakout flanges...

Thank you for sharing. Can you give me some pointers in identifying circuits prone to choking? I have the isometric and P&ID as references.

Thanks for your help! My concern now is to identify those critical slurry lines that are more susceptible to clogging. I only have the P&ID and the Isometric drawing as references. I would appreciate any suggestion/tips from yours. :)

The lines with small size or with a dead end are more susceptible to clogging...

Hi !

 

Appending to Fallah's answer ,

 

  1. For Polymer slurries,look for potential Temperature fluctuations zones (for potential viscosity changes).
  2. Ideally Slurry lines shall be without any pockets,sharp turns and Dead ends,however the same is not always feasible as per engineering constraints,thus look for these spots and identify them as prone to choking.
