What Latexman asked is:  at what LEVEL (or grade) of chemical engineering education are you at presently.

This will help to identify how much you probably know about Industrial operations.

I would also suggest a more specific question. My first reaction to this question is to ask an opposing question -- where in industry does thermodynamics not apply? In its broadest sense, thermodynamics is about how energy flows through a system. Just about every system, operation, reaction, etc. that comes readily to mind involves energy in some way.
