I am currently doing a project designing a plant for the re-refining of used lube oil.
Our plant consists of steam distillation, vacuum distillation, and some steam strippers.

One of our steam strippers is very small. Hysys sizing told us that it would be too small to be a tray tower and must be a packed tower. Our calculations told us that it would be a tiny tower 1ft in diameter, and 7.5 feet in height.

So, is there a minimum diameter for a tray tower? Should we be looking at designing a packed tower?
Also, someone mentioned to me that a vacuum distillation tower is often a packed tower, tho I haven't been able to find anything written suggesting that, nor any way to calculate the tower's dimensions for a packed vacuum tower.

Our primary resources for this project have been Nelson: petroleum refinery engineering and volumes published by the institut francais du petrole.

thanks in advance!

Hey!

I am a lil surprised. Look at this practically.

Do you think that at any place, they would place a tower as big as you have said? the thing is tiny. Please cross check your calculations. I doubt those.

As far as i know, vaccum distillation is done with normal trays.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Sorry, it's a small side-stripper used to recover propane solvent from asphalt, so the vapour flow is very small. All of our sizing correlations are based on volumetric flow of the vapour...

Nora:

It would be very, very difficult to design a 1 foot diameter trayed column for access during maintenance shutdowns. Instead of manholes, you might have to construct the tower as series of flanged sections so that the tower could be taken apart for maintenance.
