Dear Araboni
Thanks for your reply. Scientific references say as you. ANyway, in practice somewhere centrifugal pumps are used to handle fuel oil. I do not know anything about their performance and efficiency. What is your opinion?

mahdi,
one pump can't be selected exclusively on the base of one viscosity.
Generally speaking, both centrifugal and gear pumps are used in FO services.
Centrifugal pumps are generally preferred but at higher viscosities gear pumps become competitive.
A serious pump selection process with several vendors should be made in order to evaluate pros & cons of the various pump models that can be proposed.
You can obtain other advices if you attach the process pump data sheet.
Good luck

Dear all
I have a gear pump which has been bought for handling Mazut/Fuel oil with viscosity of 350 cp while in new case, Naphtha with viscosity of 0.5~1 cp should be handled. Please let me know if I can use such a gear pump for transferring low viscous Naphtha. What does Naphtha affect on performance of the pump.
The Gear pump characteristics: flow: 100 m3/h , Head: 30 m; Rotational speed: 750 rpm;
Type: Horizontal Model: EGP 6150/308 (S1.00)/EXT4 with single mechanical seal

Mahdi1980,
Consider the document above to support your work. A call to the vendor is always good .
Good luck.

Thank you Breizh for your reply and useful link.
Working with low flash point liquids and oil products like Naphtha is critical for me due to the fact that the high slip or leakage in the gear pump may cause the fluid to be warm and form partial vapor during the operation which may be dangerous.
I would be glad if you or other experts had any further suggestion
Regards
Mahdi

Mahdi,
In general, both high and low viscous liquid can be pumped with gear pumps; but in your case the care should be taken about:
1) Possibility of corrosion by Naphtha in material compatibility standpoint
2) Possibility of internal recirculation due to probable need to reduced clearances for lower viscosity liquid
Then, contact the relevant vendor to get the proper recommendations...
