I have to design Shell and Tube Heat exchanger for Sulfuric acid Cooling .


It is cooled by cooling water Supply Temperature 34 deg c and return Temperature 37 Deg C.Sulfuric acid is to cooled down to 42 deg c or below.Not above 42 degc .


Higher area can be OK for co current heat exchanger application.



Whether co -Current Heat exchanger is better than Counter current Heat exchanger as approach is +5 degc ?

Hi shah


Let me try to give some ideas to your post.


i have to start with a question to you what is the "better " you mentioned, cost or other?

Based on my experience, counter current heat exchanger normally has a better performance than co-current whatever the temperature approach is. This is because the counter current type exchangers can maintain the large temperature gradient from the inlet to the outlet of the exchanger. For co-current, the exchange rate is very good at the beginning, but it is very poor at the end and this poor section is normally making the exchanger larger. 


The use of co-current exchangers may be found in the following services:

  • the cold side has the maximum temp limit (lower than the outlet temp of hot side).
  • isothermal fluid. if there is one side which is condensation or boiling, co-current and counter current is not much different.

This is from my experience and if you want to proof it, you can perform the thermal simulation which you can see the accurated comparision of both exchanger types

Actually I have hot side outlet temperature limit .so I would like to choose best option xo vs. Counter current.Cold side outlet temperature limits by outlet temperature of hot side require
