We have an application of pumping fluid with a wide range of flow and pressure requirement. The pump rated power is about 250 KW. We need a variable speed pump to achieve these. What shall be the best method for speed variation in such power range ie from approx 100 to 250 KW? I mean can variable speed be achieved by a VFD motor (Variable Frequency Drive) or a motor coupled with pump by a fluid coupling which transmits varied rpm the pump.

Can somebody help?

There are some points to think about when we speak of variable speed(by any method) centrifugals. The pump performs as per its curve and we have to fit our scheme that is exactly matching with pump curve. If your pump is initially designed for x flowrate and y head, then your new head for 0.9x flowrate will not be more than 0.81y and if you want more head then the flowrate is less than 0.9x. This makes these systems difficult if your system resistance is predominantly static. You can play with affinity laws to check whether you will be able cope with your requirement.

Secondly, if you have variable requirement in terms of flow as well as pressure, the control becomes difficult. You should fix one parameter and then you can vary the other by what ever method you choose.

As far as the two options are concerned, you should compare initial cost, working cost, reliability, service availability and losses. I prefer a good variable frequency drive.
