Dear all,

I am currently replacing some existing 16” reactor vent lines which currently have a chinaman’s hat arrangement at the top of the vent line. I have heard rumours that a chinaman’s hat arrangement is now illegal to use on vent lines. I am unable to find any proof of such claims.

I assume a chinaman’s hat would not be the best practice as the arrangement creates additional back pressure.

The reactor has a bust disc which is set to relief at 0.5barg and is therefore not classed as a pressure system.

Would anyone know if the rumour surrounding chinamans hats is true?

They are expressly allowed for rupture disks per API 521 Part II, see Section 8.1 pg. 21. "Proper drainage, as indicated

above, is appropriate as are 'pipe caps' or 'pipe covers' in those instances where the disk is vented directly to atmosphere
with the potential of rainwater accumulation on the vent (atmospheric) side of the disk.
