Dear friends,

I am now working on design of an Ammonia revamp project. The basic licensor for this is KBR. Basic process of Revamp is adding a parrallel reformer to take care of additional 40 % capacity increase and putting a series Ammonia synthesis converter for realizing this capacity. Front end line sizes remain unchanged.

Please share the actual experience of designing/constructing & commissioning experience and the challenges in this project if any of the friends have worked on similar project.

This information will be of great help to me to avoid repetition of mistakes in design/construction & commissioning stage.

Regards.

kanan,
you can't increase your plant load with same pipeline by adding 40% additional capacity in Reforming. You need to know your system pressure drop, piping thickness , margins and any other limitations.
If you are putting additional reformer or KRES, you should go for PSA units downstream your reformer so that you can push your additional H2 into your syn loop. Please check your syn gas compressor margin , refrigeration duty etc.

Thanks Satyajit. As you have rightly said, it is not possible to increase the reformer capacity by 40 % without having a sufficient margin in pipeline sizes. I had done a thorough check on that. Line size are to be changed whereever required to meet the suction pressure at syn gas.

With reference to additional H2, this is met by producing additional H2 in the KRES unit. Total molar requirment of 3:1 (H2:N2) is met before entering the syn gas loop.

Syn gas compressor is getting modified for revamp. Refrigeration is not modified as the increase in production will be warm ammonia to be used in Urea plant.

Dear Kanan,
We should continue discussion on this topic as more new projects and revamp jobs coming up in near future.
You can put more questions with valuable informations.Hopefully, others will join us.
Satyajit
