Hi,

I have several queries regarding Coriolis Flow Meter-

1. What should be the allowable pressure drop across a Coriolis Mass Flowmeter? Is there any engineering practice that is followed frequently? Or it is just selected based on the downstream pressure requirement?

2. Are there any criteria for selection of Coriolis other than downstream pressure requirement if different manufacturer provide same Coriolis but with different pressure drop?

Hi,

Vendors determine the pressure drop across a flow meter.

The measurement accuracy is one of the important criteria for this type and the least pressure drop , the better flowmeter.

When I had scrutinized vendors data sheets I had found that their measurement accuracy is almost same across desired range of operation. 

 

Has least pressure drop any effect on accuracy or performance of Coriolis other than downstream pressure requirement?

You can initially provide allowable pressure drop of 1 bar in the initial datasheet.

For a measuring element, 1 bar pressure drop is too high!

The common delta P for liquids is around 100 mbar and the maximum might be around 200 mbar according to the process conditions. For gases, delta p is less than mentioned.

Coriolis path is unlike any other flow meter... its tortuous.  Especially in liquids, flowmeter vendor, even E&H, always gives a high pressure drop for coriolis.

 

I agree with other flowmeters.  Only 0.1 to 0.3 bar is fine for their allowable pressure drop.

When I have studied data sheet for a same Coriolis Meter for same process condition, the provided pressure drop is smaller for E&H comparing to Emerson but having same measuring accuracy.

 

As you mentioned, christopherchoa, other flowmeters having maximum pressure drop of 0.3 bar.  Does it mean that Coriolis has a pressure drop greater than 0.3 bar?  Albeit, I have got maximum pressure drop of <0.3 bar (300 mbar) for all my Coriolis meter.

I agree with other flowmeters. Only 0.1 to 0.3 bar is fine for their allowable pressure drop.

 

You are right. For liquids, the pressure drop might be higher in coriolis. Anyhow, it depends on the flow rate. As I told before, the curve of pressure drop to be checked in the vendor's catalog.

As was said before, adequate  measurement accuracy is usually the most important selection criteria for Coriolis. However, as you said, there are lots of vendors and price use to be the determinant variable for selection. Only if your client/boss ask for lower pressure drop, or there are specific process requirements you should worry about it.
