Hi,

 

I was given a task to by my boss to find out the length of pipeline from a production facility to a new refinery site to be constructed. I want to know the ways of achieving this as well as whether or not the pipe will be lined underground or on surface. The conditions that will warrant for any decision taken. 

 

I have tried locating the places on google map but yet to find any success.

 

Any useful info i can get regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by "I have tried locating the places on google map but yet to find any success"?

Are you able to go to the place? If so, a simple GPS enable device and you walking may be enough and  superior to google maps because you will know first hand the place.

Can you contract a surveyor?

What level of analysis are you doing. Concept screening? Feasibility? Basic Engineering? One thing is to draw a line on a map and multiply by a  factor to get a rough estimate, another one is to deliver a bill of materials.

What is in the middle? Do you have obstacles to go around, over, under?

What type of terrain are you crossing?

Who's property that land is?

What is exactly your problem?

 

Regarding the things you should take into account for a pipeline on a conceptual/screening stage,  please check the following

It applies to the United States, but you should expect similar issues anywhere.

For anything more detailed than a concept, you should budget for and contract someone with experience in this type of pipelines design.

Actually, i cannot go to the site yet as an estimate is what is needed now given the contract is still in its preliminary stage. Though, i checked up the link you posted and got more enlightened. 

 

Please, if you can recommend materials(tools, websites, books, etc) in Refinery Consulting (standard practices, rules of thumbs, economic analysis, construction from start to finish) i would be very grateful, as i am only a beginner in the consulting field, but i want to hone my skills and become a pro.

what you're describing (ie a conceptual study for a pipeline) has nothing to do with Refinery Consulting.
