Hi!

 

I've been searching for a way to calulate flow through a heat exchanger (I have no measurement of the flow in question).

 

The problem is that I don't have the usual variables available. I have a pump that is frequency driven, and thus delivers an unknown flow.

What I do have:

 - Pressure measured downstream the pump (upstream the HEX).

 - Estimate on the pump head.

 

Is there a way to calculate either the head loss or the velocity directly from what I've listed above?

So, what is on the other side of the heat exchanger?

Hi!

 

My opening post considered the hot side, just to be clear.

The cold side has a few measurements available, but they're situated on a common pipeline downstream a merging of several pipelines, including one from the HEX in question. And I have no further measurements to distinguish actual flow and temperature to the HEX from this common flow.

 

Any idea on how to proceed?

By the way, downstream the HEX on the hot side the liquid is led to an open vessel.

Is there an objective for this exercise? If so, you should post a PFD type sketch. This might get you more help.

Hi!

 

Sorry for the late post.

 

I've attached a simple P&ID that illustrate the process at hand.

All measured and controlled variables are depicted.

 

My goal is to find a way to compute transferred heat in the HEX.

If there's a way to compute the head loss without knowing the flow or velocity I could find the heat transferred using the energy balance on the hot side (pink color).
