Is there any way to calculate rate of combustion of coal, given the rate of air supplied to the coal. The size of the coal varies from 50mm to 80mm in size roughly

If you know the rate of combustion air fed into a coal furnace, and you assume 100% of the oxygen in the air combined with the coal,  the answer is YES.

Thank you Art, I would like to elaborate further. We are into manufacture of Coal Gasifier to produce Coal Gas ,which used as a substitute for combustion of fresh coal  of Furnace oil due to economic reasons.  The ash thus produced due to combustion of coal has to be taken out to allow fresh feed of coal. The level of fresh coal has to be maintained as per the working of the gasifier. The ash is exited by rotating Grate which throws out the ash. The problem is to arrive at precise time to rotate the grate and feed fresh coal cannot be ascertained unless all the levels are manually checked. In order to eliminate the manual operation, if we  come to know the rate at which the coal is fully burnt, we can set the timer on the rotating grate to actuate on its own to to scavenge the ash  as and when it is required. Could you please throw some ideas. ( We are using PLC driven operation for other functions)
