Dear peers,
API 618, Reciprocating compressor, paragraph 6.11.5 Crankcases, has a requirement for relief devices " if specified, the crankcase shall be provided with relief devices to protect against rapid pressure rise. These devices shall incorporate downward-directed apertures, a flame arresting mechanism, and a rapid closure device to minimize reverse flow". Normally I put the pressure relief valve on the discharge line for blocked outlet scenario, Appreciate our peers to share your experiences if you have specified a device based on this paragraph on a crankcase, eg,
1 what kind of device did you specify, eg set pressure above 15 psig or a conservation vent say with set pressure ~ 1psig ( a random low number)?
2 Does the API standard , this paragraph, call for a PSV, or a flame arrester, or a combo?
3 what could cause rapid pressure rise for a crankcase ?
etc.
Thanks in advance for sharing on this subject.
