Hello,

I need to specify the MOC of a PVSV on a concentrated H2SO4 storage tank, with nitrogen blanketing. An existing project used stainless steel valve for the body, seat and trim. Isn’t it ok just use carbon steel body with stainless seat and trim?

Thank you.

No.  The carbon steel body is in contact with the vapours, which will condense acid on the surfaces and dissolve them.

Leo,

Is the valve equipped with full nozzle? If so, it might CS body can be used, because only the nozzle and disc are exposed to the acid vapor when the valve is closed...

My advice is to use stainless steel body and trim. You might rationalize that the tank vapor is not corrosive to carbon steel. But it's likely that the valve will breathe moist air which would create an environment corrosive to carbon steel. Your acid supplier will probably provide recommendations for materials of construction.

Hello,

To add to information above consider the literature attached :

You should also talk to reputable vendors based on service condition.

Hope this is helping you

Dear All,
Thank you so much for your inputs.
To be on the conservative side, I specified stainless steel for both the body and trim, with a note vendor to confirm MOC based on service.
Regards,
Leo
