Hi All,

Could someone please suggest what chemical is used for descaling the domestic/industrial boilers and what's its composition? Could this be made at home?

Thanks

Boiler descaling chemicals are generally acids.   I have seen this done with sulphonic acid (RSO3SH) or a simple carboxylic acid (like acetic acid) or a weak mineral acid (phosphoric acid).  Obviously, products for public use (untrained) are weaker acids.  There are significant risks in descaling boilers due to the production of gas (CO2, H2) that are evolved.  The equipment should be vented to prevent overpressures.   These work if the scale is carbonate.  If the scale is silicate or silicate/carbonate, then other acids will be needed, and this should not be done without specialized training.
