Dear Cheresources Engineer,

I was wondering if you could give your opinion on this issue. We are designing some produced water treatment system that comprises of a Corrugated Plate Interceptor (CPI) and some feed pumps, which pump the treated water to a buffer tank (see the attached sketch). There are also pumps downstream of the tank that draw water from this very buffer tank. My current idea is to feed the tank at the bottom, but worry that feeding the buffer tank at the bottom would create disturbances such as the creation of bubbles which could be transmitted to the suction piping and into the pumps.

Where I work, there are cases where a buffer tank is fed at the bottom; not pumping directly, but via some residual pressure from the treatment packages. My guess is that I would require a pump with a bit higher head to feed the buffer tank from the top than at the bottom.  What you would you advise?

Sarah,

    It should not matter which you choose. But keep the inlet discharge away from the pump nozzle. You can use an internal pipe to conduct the inlet fluid away from the pump nozzle. I would point the discharge toward the floor.

Anyway, you have to include the buffer tank level liquid head into your pump discharge head .  (No pump head increase because of top feeding). 

 

Therefore, I vote to feed the buffer tank at the top of buffer tank to avoid catastrophic flooding (whole tank of water) in case of the bottom feed line leakage.  

 

Also, top feeding allows the constant pump discharge pressure while bottom feeding pump discharge pressure varies with the buffer tank liquid level.

Hi,

 

Normally the tank feeding would be done from the top with extending the dip pipe till around the tank bottom. There is an exception by which the fire water storage tanks to be fed from the bottom because the feed pipe should be full of water all the time in safety stand point.
