Hello,

I am currently working on the concept of direct chilling one of a reactor with Liquid Anhydrous Ammonia instead of Chilled Brine to maintain the temperature of the reactor.

The Reactor has Lead lined/bonded coils inside of it to facilitate chilling through Chilled Brine.

In order to proceed with Direct Chilling, Anhydrous Ammonia needs to be compatible with the lead-lined/bonded coils, and since I couldn't find any compatibility/incompatibility between them even after extensive research, I was hoping someone would help me out on whether Anhydrous Ammonia is compatible with lead-lined/bonded coils.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Hello Aravind,

I'm not sure about material compatibility, but do watchout that if switching to anh. NH3 that the electrical hazardous area rating may change since ammonia release will form vapour that is possibly flammable.  Also, the maximum pressure scenario for the pressure relief protection for the coil side may be alot higher due to high vapour pressure of ammonia.
