Dear Sirs,

I´m working with methanol-water solutions at diverse concentrations and temperatures.  All of these samples are at atmospheric pressure.

In the laboratory we can obtain the density and temperature of the samples.  The samples are at different temperatures -  i.e., 25, 30, 40, and 50 °C and I need to know their methanol concentration.  Maybe You can help me.  Where can I obtain tables that give the methanol concentration directly and avoid waiting for decrease in temperature to 20°C (in the Perry Handbook I found a table at this temperature)?

Napo.

Hi ,

Let you consider the document attached , it may not cover the full range of temperature but you should be able to cool the sample prior to check the density I guess.

Hope this is helping you.

Dear Breizh,

Many Thanks for your help.  Your information is very important.  With this chart I´m trying to get a correlation to indentify the concentration at relatively "high" temperatures.

Of course, I can wait to cool the samples (in the laboratory).  However, the problem is that I´m in the field (Amazonia) the temperature is near 30°C.

Hi Napo,

I had similar experience , it was in China. I established a correlation based on the document on hands for the recovery of methanol in a mixture of sulfuric acid, water and methanol .

Good luck.

Napo:

I've also have had to cope with the humid and hot environment of the Amazon Basin.  My experience was in Peru, where I met and married my wife 55 years ago.  I was hot and thirsty in Iquitos and had a six-pack of Cristal beer bottles with two friends.  We needed refreshment but the beer was at the ambient jungle temperature and we had no means of cooling it.

I remembered a story one of  my uncles had told me when he was in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific theater where he and his buddies used CO2 fire extinguishers on board his aircraft carrier to cool down beer cans.  We got a CO2 fire extinguisher and applied the same "trick" in Iquitos and it worked like a charm.  I'll bet you could use the same method of expanding liquid CO2 on your methanol solution samples to cool them down quickly.  With a little practice, I'm sure you'll reduce the samples' temperature to what you need.  I hope this helps.
