Hi,

I am working on a dry gas seal project. I have  a  book on dry gas seals in which following is written.

 

" It is also desirable to minimize seal gas consumption. The majority of the injected seal gas flows across the inner labyrinth seal and back into compressor (the flow is recycled)."

 

Now here author is talking about after passing through inner labyrinth seal and back to compressor. I cannot understand this one. In my understanding as seal gas is injected it flows through primary seal and then to primary vent.

 

I am still very much new to the topic so may be I still do not have full grasp of the topic. Please help me out here.

I think what it meant was that if the seal gas is taking from a higher pressure side like the discharge and going back to seal a lower pressure side, like an intermediate stage, then its possible to go back to the compressor to be recycled. If the pressure is not enough or if its another gas, like a nitrogen seal, then it goes out to vent. I could be wrong on this, maybe someone else can correct me as well.

Inner labyrinth is towards the process end, and primary seal gas during normal operation is from compressor discharge, so there is a possibility that some portion of it move into the compressor.

Some portion of it (primary seal gas) will move into the compressor, not as a possibility, but as a matter of fact.

As long as positive flow is maintained, some portion of the seal gas flow (primary) goes to the vent and the remained goes into the compressor via the process labyrinth. It is generally a very tiny amount but not zero.
