Dear All,

I would like to ask your views on the criteria you follow for setting set pressure for the PSVs at the discharge of centrifugal compressors running with  variable speed drives. Do you usually determine it based on the maximum system operating pressure at maximum speed corresponding to maximum suction pressure + a 10% margin?

I consider the selection should take care to avoid PSV from popping before the anti-surge valve opens!

Additionally, some other companies consider setting the PSV based on downstream system design pressure rating considering the Maximum operating rated discharge pressure of compressor +10% margin

Aprpeciate your views on the subject

Regards,

Well, the equipment downstream of the compressor pressure design is established first. And it's usually the maximum operating pressure + 10%. Once that is done, then the compressor discharge PSV must be set at the downstream equipment maximum allowable working pressure. Unless you have some unusual process configuration.
